Singapore Early Stage Scene

TechinAsia wrote an article about how tough it is to be technology start-up. Based on numbers from a selected few active investors of early stage companies, they categorised and summarized the the companies’ current status. The key take away message of the article is: if you want to make boatloads of money, trying to create a true game-changer won’t be the most likely way to succeed. While the scenery has become less gloomy, it’s still true that if you want to do a startup, your reason for doing it should be to create new value and navigate uncharted markets.

Quotes we really like in a recent interview with the founder:

Winnie: Tech startup founders wear many hats and so there is a long list of essential skills. I will probably be able to write a whole article just trying to list all these skills. Let me just list the few skills/traits that I personally think are the most crucial:

  • Ability to sell. Sell your company, your vision, your product, or yourself. You must be able to sell to raise money, recruit talents, and generate revenue.
  • Management skills. With limited resource and runway, technopreneurs must be able to manage the people and funds effectively to achieve clear goals.
  • Tenacity. Persistent determination is a must have because most people will shoot down your idea in the beginning and you will meet with failures. But try, try, and try again. And repeat.
